Makerere Impis; Too Good for the Championship, Maybe not good enough for the Nile Special Stout Rugby Premier league.

The year 2019 saw the Makerere Impis relegated to the central championship, which is the second tier of Ugandan Rugby. The university side sailed through this league recording 100% win record with some games posting astronomical scores, gaining them promotion to the new and rebranded Nile Special Stout Rugby Premier League.

However, a team that was at some point nicknamed “Bonus Points RFC” seems to be getting L’s for fun now. The half century loss to current league Champions Hima Cement Heathens has fans and pundits asking questions like, “Are the university boys good enough?” “Was the promotion too soon?”

Having won online battles against bitter rivals like Worried Warriors (9Barrels Warriors) and NRM Rhinos (Shell Rimula Rhinos), Impis seems to be the most enviable team when it comes to online antics. This has garnered some fans and friends, and the electric atmosphere at the Graveyard has contributed more to the growth of this fan base.
But at the end of the day the question remains, where are the results?
The youthful Impis shall open the new decade against former league champions, Stanbic Black Pirates at King’s Park Bweyogerere, a fixture that is expected to literally be a walk in the “park” for Coach Bobby and company.

The woes of the beloved Makerere Impis continue into the new year but the boys are expected to pick themselves up along the way.
