Uganda looks set to host the 2019 edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards, also known as the MAMAs after the cabinet gave an ‘OK’ to Uganda’s bid.
The awards were established in 2008 to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa. The event has already been hosted in various African cities including; Abuja, Lagos, Nairobi, Durban, and Johannesburg.
The award took a break in 2017 and is set to return this year with Kampala as one of its potential hosts.
Cabinet, through the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, expects that hosting the event will;
- Showcase the best of Uganda to a Pan-African and Global audience.
- Provide a platform that empowers Ugandan and other African artists, whilst celebrating creative diversity and excellence.
- Empower the population through job and internship opportunities during the campaign.
- Create a public relations opportunity for tourism stakeholders.
The dates for the 2019 MAMAs are yet to be confirmed as well as the other countries in for a bidding war with Uganda.
